When Texas driver Feras Qartoumy shipped his carbon-bodied C6 Corvette halfway across the globe to compete at the 2025 Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) in Sydney, Australia, he carried both determination and experience from a near miss the year prior. This time, he returned with twin Garrett G-Series G35-1050 turbos supplying more air into his 427cu (7 Liter) Late Model Engines-built LS-based engine. The result: a blistering 1:23.269 lap that secured 1st place in the Plazmaman Pro-Am Class and set a new benchmark at Sydney Motorsport Park for the class.

With an estimated 1,300 horsepower on tap, controlled by Garrett GVW-45 wastegates and GVB-50A blow-off valves, Qartoumy’s Corvette isn’t just fast, but reliable — delivering the consistency and pace needed to claim the top step of the podium.

From Texas to the Top of WTAC

Qartoumy’s journey into motorsport has been one of steady progression and ambition. Based in Texas, he first cut his teeth in local racing with a 1972 LS-swapped Nova before realizing the chassis was not competitive enough to go further. By 2016, his focus had shifted to developing a heavily modified Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06, which would go on to become one of the most competitive cars in North America on the time attack circuit.

The breakthrough came in 2020, when the newly turbocharged Corvette made its debut and immediately set a Track Modified record at Gridlife’s Gingerman Raceway. From there, the pace and reputation only grew. Qartoumy has since collected 29 records, earned a victory at WTAC 2023 and Attack Tsukuba win in Japan in 2024.

For Qartoumy, racing in Australia is more than chasing a title. It’s about proving that a privateer from Texas can compete — and win — on the world’s biggest time attack stage.

Full-Circle with Garrett Power

One of the most remarkable aspects of this story is Qartoumy’s relationship with Garrett Motion. Years ago, he claimed his first Garrett turbocharger as a prize at Super Lap Battle while still running a naturally aspirated setup in the very same car. That prized turbo evolved into a full twin-turbo program running Garrett G-Series G35-900s, and today his Corvette runs twin Garrett G-Series G35-1050s, paired with GVW wastegates and GVB blow-off valves for ultimate boost control.

From prize to podium, the journey underscores the reliability and performance that Garrett products bring to grassroots racers and help elevate them into world-class competitors.

The 2025 WTAC Victory

At the 2024 WTAC, Qartoumy narrowly missed the Pro-Am win with a 1:25.45 lap, finishing second behind the Finnish R8 1:1. Rather than overhauling his Corvette, Qartoumy spent the next year refining its setup — focusing on suspension geometry, aero balance, and thermal efficiency. The strategy worked.

Returning in 2025, the Corvette delivered a 1:23.269 lap — a full two seconds quicker than the previous year — to take the Plazmaman Pro-Am record. Drawing on countless hours behind the wheel and a background as a former off-road fabricator and chassis builder, Qartoumy showcased a car and driving style that delivered composure and consistency throughout the weekend.

Looking Ahead

With his 2025 WTAC Pro-Am victory secured, Qartoumy has further cemented his reputation as a global time attack contender. From Texas to all around the USA, to Tsukuba to Sydney, his Corvette continues to push the limits of what’s possible in the discipline. The focus now shifts to defending his crown — and perhaps even challenging outright records in the seasons ahead.

Garrett-HVAC-chillers

The HVAC industry is undergoing a transformation. Pressured by climate goals, urban expansion, and the rise of data-driven infrastructure, manufacturers and system designers are rethinking the fundamentals. Efficiency is no longer a bonus: it’s a baseline. Reliability is expected. And sustainability is non-negotiable.

At the center of this shift is a technology that’s quietly rewriting the rules: the oil-free centrifugal compressor using foil bearings.

A Simpler Machine for a Smarter World

Traditional compressors rely on oil for lubrication and sealing. That means pipes, pumps, filters, and reservoirs, all of which add complexity, consume space, and introduce points of failure. Garrett’s oil-free centrifugal compressors, supported by foil bearing technology, eliminate these components entirely. The result is a frictionless, cleaner architecture that’s easier to install, simpler to maintain, and more reliable over time.

Fewer parts mean fewer problems. And in HVAC, where uptime is critical and access is often limited, think tight rooftop units, battery storage systems, or remote data centers, that simplicity translates directly into cost savings and operational peace of mind.

Safety in the Age of Low-GWP Refrigerants

As the industry moves toward low global warming potential (GWP) and natural refrigerants, new challenges emerge. Many of these refrigerants are mildly flammable, and when mixed with oil, the risks increase. Oil-free compressors remove oil from the system entirely, reducing the risk of ignition and helping OEMs and building operators meet evolving safety and sustainability standards.

This is especially important in high-stakes environments. Rooftop cooling systems for residential and office buildings must meet strict safety codes. Data centers, where even a momentary outage can cost millions, demand thermal management solutions that are both robust and risk-averse. Garrett’s oil-free design delivers both.

Quieter, Cleaner, Longer-Lasting

Noise and vibration aren’t just nuisances, they’re symptoms of inefficiency. They contribute to refrigerant leaks, shorten system life, and disrupt comfort in residential areas. Garrett’s oil-free centrifugal compressors operate with significantly lower vibration and up to 10 dBA noise reduction, making them ideal for urban installs and acoustically sensitive spaces.

Lower vibration also means tighter seals and fewer refrigerant leaks, helping extend system life and reduce maintenance, critical in locations where access is limited or service costs are high.

Garrett: Engineering the Future of HVAC

Garrett’s oil-free E-Cooling solution brings aerospace-grade precision and seven decades of turbomachinery and foil bearing expertise to the HVAC world. Built with the rigor of automotive manufacturing, it meets the demands of modern cooling, without compromise.

  • Runs with low-GWP and natural refrigerants
  • Delivers compact, high-power performance in tight spaces
  • Up to 20% energy savings
  • 75% smaller than legacy oil-lubricated systems
  • Quiet, vibration-resistant, and built for long-term duty cycles

It’s not just an upgrade. It’s a smarter path forward.

Garrett is enabling the next generation of HVAC with compact design, oil-free reliability, and uncompromising performance.
